De Doelen is a place of extremes. On one side of the building visitors walk in their evening dresses to a gala diner while on the other side an exhibition is set up for the next day. It is exemplary for the way in which the building is used. One can find prestigious concerts as well as large-scale exhibitions that occasionally have to be built up in no time. On the 16th Conference of the European Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) the focus was on sharing joint expertise, presenting and collecting knowledge and experiences relevant to the field of traumatic stress, by building bridges between different perspectives, disciplines and countries.
De Doelen succeeded two years ago in committing the international conference Classical: NEXT for at least three years to Rotterdam. Classical Next is the annual meeting for professionals working in the international classical music industry. This year, the second edition in de Doelen attracted around 1,000 visitors from over 40 different countries.

Twice a year de Doelen is home to the ceremony where medical students of the Erasmus University receive their white coat. This coat is a symbol for their works as a co-assistant in the hospital.
Every januari Rotterdam is host to one of the largest audience and industry-driven film festivals in the world, the IFFR. During twelve festival days, hundreds of filmmakers and other artists present their work to a large audience (2016: 305.000 admissions) and 2.538 film professionals. During the festival de halls of de Doelen are used for screenings but the venue is home to many film-related activities such as the Cinemart and the ticket office.
